20 best ways to use your free time. What to do in your free time?
If you have a large block of free time, the best way to use it is to
relax, have fun, unwind from a stressful day or spend time with a loved one.
But if you only have a small chunk – say 5 or 10 minutes – there's no time to
do any fun stuff.
So what to do in your spare time?
Put these small chunks of time to their most productive use.
Everyone works differently, so the best use of your free time really
depends on you, your work style, and what's on your to-do list. But it is
useful to have such a list so that you can quickly find a way to put the little
free time to work immediately, without any thought. Use the following list as a
way to spark ideas for what you can do in a short amount of time.
1. Reading files
Cut out magazine articles or print out good articles or news to read
later and save them in a folder labeled "Reading File." Take it
wherever you are, and whenever you have a bit of time, you can knock out the
items in your reading file.
Keep the reading file on your computer (or bookmarked) for quick reading
while sitting at your desk (or on the go if you have a laptop).
2. Clear your inbox
Do you have an appointment in 5 minutes? Use it to empty your physical
or email inbox.
If you have a lot in your inbox, you'll have to work quickly and may not
get everything done; but reducing your pile can be a big help. And having an
empty inbox is a wonderful feeling.
3. Telephone calls
Keep a list of phone calls you need to make with phone numbers and carry
it with you everywhere.
Whether you're at your desk or on the go, you can knock a few calls off
your list in a short amount of time.
4. Make money
This is my favorite productive use of free time. I have a list of
articles I need to write, and when I get some free time, I'll knock out half of
the article real quick.
If you have 5 to 10 pieces of free time a day, you can earn a decent
side income. Find out how you can freelancing your skills and have work ready
to knock out quickly – break it down into small chunks so you can do them in
short bursts.

5. File
Nobody likes to do that. If you're at the top of your game, you put
things in immediately so it doesn't pile up.
But if you just came from a really busy spurt, you might have a lot of
documents or files.
TIME POVERTY doesn't come from how much time you have. Learn how to
reclaim the time you deserve.
Or maybe you have a large pile of stuff to archive. Slice into it with
every bit of free time you have and you'll soon be playing Nirvana.
6. Network
Do you only have 2 minutes? Send a quick email to a colleague. Even just
"touching base" or a follow-up email can do wonders for your working
relationship. Or fire off a quick question and put it on your list for later.
7. Delete channels
If my inbox is empty and I have some free time, I like to go to my
Google Reader and clean out the inbox from the source.
8. Goal time
Spend 10 minutes thinking about your goals – personal and professional.
If you don't have a list of goals, start with one. If you have a list of
goals, check them off.
Write a list of action steps you can take in the next few weeks to make
these goals a reality. What action step can you take today? The more you focus
on and control these goals, the more likely they are to come true.
9. Update financials
Many people fall behind on their finances, whether it's paying bills
(they don't have time) or entering transactions into their financial software,
accounting for their checkbook, or reviewing their budget.
Take a few minutes to update these things. It takes 10 to 15 minutes
from time to time.
10. Brainstorm ideas
Another favorite of mine, if I only have 5 minutes – I pull out my
pocket notebook and start brainstorming a list for a project or article.
Whatever comes up in your work or personal life can benefit from brainstorming.
And it doesn't take long.
11. Clear the table
Similar to the decluttering tip above, but this applies to any junk
cluttering up your desk. Or on the floor around your desk.
Throw things away, put things away, put it in its place. Thanks to a
well-arranged desk, you will be more productive. And it's strangely satisfying.
12.
Exercise
Never have time to exercise? 10 minutes is enough to get you out of some
push-ups and push-ups. Do this 2 to 3 times a day and you have a new fit.
13. Take a
walk
You may perform this type of exercise anyplace and it doesn't take long.
It's also a wonderful method to stretch your legs after spending too much time
sitting at a computer.
It will also get your creative juices flowing. If you're ever stuck for
ideas, a walk is a good way to unwind.
14. Follow
up
Keep a running list of everything you're waiting for. Return calls,
emails, notes - list everything someone owes you.
When you have 10 minutes to spare, call or email.
15.
Meditate
You don't need a yoga mat for this. Do it at your desk. Concentrate on
your breathing. A quick 5 to 10 minute meditation (or even a nap) can be
extremely refreshing.
16.
Research
This is a daunting task for me. So I'm taking it in small steps.
If I only have a few minutes, I'll do some quick research and make
notes. Do this a few times and I'm done!
17.
Outline
Similar to brainstorming, but more formal. I like to outline a complex
article, report or project and it helps speed things up when I get down to the
actual writing. And it only takes a few minutes.
18. Get
ready
Outlining is one way to prepare for a longer job, but there are many
other ways you can prepare for the next task on your list.
You may not have time to start a task right now, but when you get back
from a meeting or lunch, you'll be prepared and ready to go.
19. Be
early
Do you have any free time before the meeting? Show up for the
appointment early.
Sure, you might feel like a slob sitting there by yourself, but in
reality, people respect those who show up early. It's better than being late
(unless you're trying to power trip or something, but that's frowned upon in
many circles).
20. Log
If you're busy, a few spare minutes is the perfect time to update your
journal.
In fact, the ideal time to update your log is right after you've done an
activity (exercising, eating, running a widget), but if you haven't had time to
do it before, your 5-minute break is as good as none.
